Why is urine yellow?

Urine appears yellow due to urochrome, a natural pigment in the urine. This pigment results from the breakdown of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells. As the body metabolizes hemoglobin, waste products are produced, filtered by the kidneys and excreted as urine.

The shade of yellow in urine can vary depending on factors such as hydration levels, dietary choices, and certain medications. If a person is well-hydrated, their urine may appear light yellow or pale straw-coloured. On the other hand, if they are dehydrated, the urine can become darker, taking on a deeper amber hue.

The colour of urine is an important indicator of one’s hydration status and overall health. Drinking an adequate amount of water can help maintain a healthy urine colour and support proper kidney function by flushing out toxins from the body.
